Internship Abroad vs. Other Placement Agencies — What Indian Students Should Know
9 min read · Internship Abroad India
We are going to be direct here — this is a comparison article about ourselves, written by us. We think you deserve a fair assessment rather than pure marketing. Here is how we compare to the alternatives for Indian students.
The Landscape for Indian Students
Indian students have several options for finding international internships:
- Apply directly (LinkedIn, company websites)
- Through university exchange programmes
- Traditional placement agencies (often charging large upfront fees)
- Platforms like Internship Abroad
Direct Applications: The Honest Assessment
What works: For students at top-tier institutions (IIT, IIM) with strong profiles, direct applications to international companies can work — particularly for summer programmes that actively recruit from these institutions.
What doesnt: For the majority of Indian students at other institutions, cold applications to European or Southeast Asian companies have a very low success rate. Without local contacts, a locally optimised CV, or name recognition, most applications dont get past screening. This is not a failure of the student — it is a structural information and network gap.
Traditional Placement Agencies: What to Watch Out For
Several agencies operate in the Indian market targeting students going abroad for internships. Warning signs to look for:
- Large upfront fees with no placement guarantee: Some agencies charge Rs. 50,000–2,00,000 before doing any placement work. If they dont place you, you may lose some or all of the fee. Ask explicitly: "What happens if I dont get placed?"
- Vague company lists: "300+ companies" sounds good until you find out the companies are not verified or the list hasnt been updated in years. Ask to see specific company examples in your field and destination.
- Bundled services you dont need: Language courses, accommodation packages, and other add-ons that significantly increase total cost but are not necessary.
- CV grinding mills: Some agencies send your CV to every company regardless of fit, which can actually damage your reputation with companies who receive dozens of Indian intern applications at once.
How We Work (Transparent)
Internship Abroad is a pay-on-success model. Here is exactly how it works:
- Free Account (Rs. 0): Access to preparation guides, community, cost calculators, destination research. No placement, just information.
- Living Profile (Rs. 699 one-time): Your professional profile visible to 300+ verified companies. Companies browse profiles and contact students directly. No guarantee of placement — you are visible, not matched.
- Full Service (from Rs. 65,000): We do not charge this until after you have a confirmed placement. If we dont place you, you pay nothing. This is the key difference from most agencies.
What Full Service includes: Discovery session, customised matching to 3–5 specific companies, visa documentation support, accommodation guidance, pre-departure briefing, local mentor introduction, 24/7 WhatsApp support, and completion certificate.
What it does not include: Flight booking, accommodation booking itself, visas on your behalf (we guide you, you apply). We are transparent about the scope.
The Honest Comparison
| Feature | Internship Abroad | Typical Agency | Direct Apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment timing | After confirmed placement | Often upfront | Free |
| Placement guarantee | Yes (no placement = no charge) | Varies — check carefully | None |
| Visa support | Yes, included | Sometimes, often extra | None |
| Company matching | Personalised (3–5 specific) | Often bulk CV sending | You do it yourself |
| Free tier | Yes (real content and tools) | Usually no | Yes (but no support) |
When You Should NOT Use Us
We think it is worth being honest about when our service is not the right fit:
- If you are at an IIT/IIM and your institution actively facilitates strong international placements — use that route first. It is free.
- If you have a strong existing connection to a specific company abroad — apply directly. You dont need us.
- If you want to intern in the USA — we dont operate there yet. The J-1 visa process for India requires specific US-based sponsoring organisations.
- If you have a very limited budget — our free account gives you the information and preparation tools. The Full Service is an investment that makes most sense when your ROI on the placement is high (which it usually is).
