German Internship Visa for Indian Students 2026: Step-by-Step Application Guide
Indian students need a Section 17 Aufenthaltserlaubnis (Student Internship residence permit) for a paid internship in Germany. Processing at VFS Global takes 6 to 10 weeks and costs approximately Rs 10,500 in consular fees. This guide covers every step: which visa category to apply for, the full document checklist, VFS appointment booking and what to expect at the consulate.
Which visa type do you need? The decision table
| Situation | Visa Category | Legal Basis | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid internship, any sector | National Visa + Aufenthaltserlaubnis (Section 17 AufenthG) | Section 17 Aufenthaltsgesetz | Internship contract, proof of funds (EUR 934/month) |
| Unpaid or curricular internship (mandatory for Indian degree) | National Visa + Aufenthaltserlaubnis (Section 16e AufenthG) | Section 16e Aufenthaltsgesetz | University enrollment letter confirming the internship is mandatory |
| Post-graduation job search | Job-Seeker Visa (6 months) | Section 20 AufenthG | Degree certificate, proof of funds, professional profile |
| Highly qualified, 2+ years experience | EU Blue Card | Section 18b AufenthG | Degree + German employer + salary above EUR 43,800/year |
For the vast majority of Indian students going to Germany for a summer or semester internship: Section 17 is the correct category. You apply for a national visa (type D) in India, then register at the Auslaenderbehoerde within 3 days of arriving in Germany to receive the physical residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel).
Required documents checklist
Gather every document before booking your VFS appointment. Missing documents are the most common reason for delays.
- Internship contract (Praktikumsvertrag) signed by both you and the German employer, specifying start/end dates, working hours, remuneration and employer address
- University enrollment certificate (current academic year, with seal and signature)
- Proof of German health insurance covering the full internship period. AOK, Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) and BARMER all have online sign-up for international students starting from EUR 110 to EUR 130/month
- Proof of accommodation in Germany: employer-arranged housing confirmation, signed rental agreement, or written confirmation from your employer that housing is provided
- Financial proof: bank statements showing sufficient funds (EUR 934/month is the minimum threshold set by German authorities for 2026). If your internship stipend meets this threshold, attach the salary clause from your contract
- Valid Indian passport with at least 2 blank pages and validity extending 3 months beyond your intended stay
- Completed visa application form (available on the German Embassy website for download)
- 2 recent biometric photos (35x45mm, white background)
- Cover letter explaining your internship purpose and return plans
- Academic transcripts (last 2 semesters, official copy with seal)
Translation rule: Documents in languages other than English or German must be translated by a certified translator. VFS accepts certified translations. Allow 5 to 7 business days for certified translation services in India.
Step-by-step: VFS appointment and consulate process
Step 1: Book your VFS Global appointment
Germany processes Indian visa applications through VFS Global at four centres: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Book online at vfsglobal.com/germany/india. Appointment slots fill up 6 to 8 weeks in advance during peak summer season. Book as early as possible -- do not wait for your contract to be fully signed before booking.
Step 2: Submit documents at VFS
Arrive 15 minutes early with printed copies of every document plus 1 digital copy (USB or email). VFS staff do a preliminary check but do not make the final decision -- your file is forwarded to the German Embassy. The consular fee of EUR 75 (approximately Rs 6,750) is paid at VFS along with the VFS service charge of approximately Rs 3,600.
Step 3: Consulate interview (if required)
Not all applicants are called for an interview, but students applying for Section 17 permits are sometimes asked. Common questions: What is the nature of your internship? Who is your supervisor? How did you find this company? How do you plan to cover living costs? Have your contract and financial documents ready to reference.
Step 4: Tracking your application
VFS provides a reference number. Check status at vfsglobal.com. Standard processing is 6 to 10 business weeks. If you do not hear back after 10 weeks, contact the German Embassy directly with your reference number.
Processing times and peak season delays
| Internship Start | Apply By | Expected Processing |
|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | By 15 April 2026 (already tight) | 10 to 14 weeks (peak) |
| September / October 2026 | By 15 June 2026 | 6 to 10 weeks (standard) |
| January 2027 | By 1 October 2026 | 6 to 8 weeks (off-peak) |
Indian students targeting a July 2026 start in Germany should be applying right now. Applications submitted after mid-May carry a real risk of delay.
Health insurance: the most overlooked requirement
German authorities require statutory German health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung), not international travel insurance. Indian travel insurance policies are not accepted. The three most common options for international interns are:
- Techniker Krankenkasse (TK): English-language support, online signup, EUR 110 to EUR 130/month for interns under 25
- AOK: Largest German public insurer, 16 regional offices, accepts most intern applications
- BARMER: English online forms, popular with international students
Sign up online before your VFS appointment. Include the insurance confirmation letter in your visa documents. Many insurers allow you to sign up pending visa approval.
