What is DAAD WISE and who qualifies?

DAAD WISE (Working Internships in Science and Engineering) is a fellowship programme run by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) specifically for STEM undergraduates from developing and newly industrialised countries. India is one of the largest source countries for WISE fellows each year.

To qualify for WISE as an Indian student:

  • Degree level: Enrolled in a B.Tech, B.E., M.Tech, M.Sc., or integrated dual-degree STEM programme at an AICTE or UGC-approved Indian institution.
  • Year of study: Penultimate or final year of your undergraduate degree (typically 3rd or 4th year of a 4-year BTech), or currently in a postgraduate STEM programme.
  • Academic performance: A CGPA of 8.5 or above out of 10 is the typical benchmark. Exceptional applicants with strong research experience are considered from 8.0.
  • Field of study: Engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, aerospace, biomedical), natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences), mathematics, or computer science.
  • Age: Under 32 at the start of the fellowship.

Indian students applying via WISE are competing with applicants from across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. India consistently sends the highest number of WISE fellows to Germany from Asia, which reflects both the strength of Indian STEM education and the long-standing DAAD-India partnership. WISE fellows from Indian IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, and centrally funded universities have a strong track record of acceptance.

How much does WISE pay? Total value for Indian students

Component Amount (EUR) Approx. amount (INR) Notes
Monthly stipend EUR 650-750/month Rs 59,000-68,000/month Covers accommodation + food in most German cities
Travel allowance (lump sum) EUR 500 Rs 45,500 Paid once, for return flights India-Germany
Health insurance EUR 40-120/month Included in fellowship DAAD arranges basic travel and health cover
Total (3-month fellowship) ~EUR 2,750-2,960 ~Rs 2.5-2.7 lakh Covers full living costs for the fellowship period

Berlin costs around EUR 900-1,100/month for a student (accommodation EUR 500-650 in a WG shared flat, food EUR 200-250, transport EUR 86 for a monthly pass). The EUR 700 monthly stipend covers the majority of these costs, meaning most Indian WISE fellows spend less during the fellowship than during a typical semester at IIT or NIT when hostel fees and living costs are factored in.

Which German institutes participate in WISE?

WISE placements happen at German universities and publicly funded research institutes. The most prominent WISE host organisations for Indian STEM students are:

  • Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (76 institutes across Germany): Europe's largest applied research organisation. Fields include manufacturing, materials science, electronics, IT security, energy, and medical technology. Fraunhofer institutes work directly with industry -- the experience is close to a corporate R&D placement.
  • Max Planck Society (84 institutes): Fundamental research in biology, chemistry, physics, astrophysics, and social sciences. Max Planck labs have produced 30+ Nobel laureates. Highly competitive but extremely prestigious.
  • Helmholtz Association (18 research centres): Energy, Earth and environment, health, aeronautics and space, matter, and information. Helmholtz centres are large-scale facilities -- GSI (particle physics), DKFZ (cancer research), DLR (aerospace).
  • German universities: TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT (Karlsruhe), TU Berlin, and the 9 universities of excellence all actively participate in WISE and host dozens of Indian fellows each year.

March-April 2027 Apply for German student visa at VFS Global (allow 8-12 weeks). Book accommodation.
June-August 2027 Fellowship begins. Typically 10-12 weeks.

Start now: The most successful WISE applicants from India begin contacting potential host supervisors 5-6 months before the portal opens. A professor who has agreed to host you informally dramatically improves your application. The portal opens in October -- start emailing in June.

How to write a winning WISE application

The statement of purpose (SOP) is the heart of a WISE application. DAAD reviewers see hundreds of generic SOPs from strong academic performers. The ones that stand out have three qualities:

  1. Specificity about the host lab: Name the professor, the research group, and the specific project you want to work on. Explain why that work matters to your career trajectory. Generic enthusiasm for "Germany" or "European research" does not move the needle.
  2. Technical evidence of readiness: Reference relevant coursework, lab skills, software tools (MATLAB, Python, COMSOL, etc.), or research projects from your degree. WISE hosts want to know you will add value on day one, not need months of training.
  3. A clear return plan: DAAD wants fellows to bring skills back to their home country. Articulate how the fellowship feeds into your long-term research goals in India -- whether that's a PhD, an R&D role, or a startup.

To understand how Indian STEM students are currently presenting themselves internationally -- and what makes profiles stand out to European research labs -- see this example engineering student profile. The same principles that make an internship profile strong apply to a WISE SOP.

Frequently asked questions

Is DAAD WISE only for engineering students from India?

WISE covers a broad range of STEM disciplines including physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and biology. Arts, commerce, or humanities students are not eligible. Indian students in these non-STEM fields should look at other DAAD programmes such as the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship.

How competitive is DAAD WISE for Indian students?

Very competitive. India is one of the top source countries for WISE applicants globally. A CGPA of 8.5 or above is the common benchmark among successful applicants. The most important differentiator is a specific, well-researched statement of purpose aligned with your identified host supervisor's research area.

Is German language required for DAAD WISE?

No. DAAD WISE fellowships at German universities and research institutes operate in English. A basic German language certificate (A1 or A2) is a plus but not a requirement for most WISE positions. Your technical skills, academic transcript, and research fit matter far more than German proficiency.

Can Indian students extend the DAAD WISE fellowship beyond 3 months?

WISE fellowships are fixed at 2-3 months and are not extendable under the WISE programme. However, if your host supervisor wants to keep you on, you may be able to negotiate a paid research assistant position or apply for a separate DAAD short-term research grant for an additional period.

What is the total value of a DAAD WISE fellowship for Indian students in 2026?

For a 3-month WISE fellowship: monthly stipend EUR 700 x 3 = EUR 2,100 plus travel allowance EUR 500 plus health insurance coverage. Total value approximately EUR 2,960 (roughly Rs 2.7 lakh at current exchange rates). This covers your full cost of living in Germany for the fellowship period.
