DAAD WISE (Germany)

The Working Internships in Science and Engineering programme is a German government scholarship administered by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). It funds Indian undergraduate students for short summer research internships at German universities and research institutes including Max Planck, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, and university research groups.

Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility

Erasmus+ ICM funds short-term student mobility between EU and non-EU partner institutions, including India. Indian universities with bilateral Erasmus+ agreements can nominate students for funded mobility periods at their EU partner.

What it funds

How to access

Speak to your university's International Office or Office of International Affairs. Erasmus+ ICM is institution-mediated; students cannot apply directly to the EU. Many large Indian universities (IITs, IISc, IIITs, central universities, several private universities) have ICM agreements. For research-stream universities the partner list is typically published on the International Office page.

Corporate Paid Internships

Self-Funded Placements via Internship Abroad

For Indian students who do not secure DAAD WISE, Charpak, or Erasmus+ funding, the most reliable pathway is a structured placement service. Internship Abroad places Indian students in paid internships across Europe, with visa support, accommodation guidance, and on-the-ground mentorship. Stipends come from the host company and depend on country and role.

Choosing the right pathway

For STEM students with strong academics: start with DAAD WISE or Charpak Lab. Both are competitive but free if you win. Apply 6-9 months ahead.

If your university has Erasmus+ agreements: check the partner list immediately. ICM is the largest single source of EU mobility funding for Indian students.

For business, design, or non-STEM fields: direct corporate applications + structured placement support is the fastest route. Most stipend internships in Europe are not funded by scholarships but by employers.

Combine: many students stack — apply to DAAD WISE / Charpak as a long shot, simultaneously line up corporate applications and a placement service as the realistic path.

Visa basics for Indian students

Most short summer internships (under 90 days): Schengen short-stay visa (Type C). Plan 4-6 weeks for processing.

Longer placements (over 90 days): National long-stay visa (Type D) + residence permit on arrival. Country-specific:
